Shut Up & Shift! is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
Some may see the words “Shut Up” as aggressive or even a bad word, but author
Ginny Scaduto quickly explains it isn’t meant to quiet you, but to make you take a moment to think. This book is part memoir, part self-help, and part life-coaching
workbook, rolled into one easy-to-digest package. If you have been feeling like you
need a change in your life, this book may be what you’ve been looking for.
The book is separated into three distinct parts. Part one focuses on examples of places
in one’s life where change may be needed, but isn’t recognized yet. These first
seventeen chapters highlight areas where all of us could probably use a little
improvement, then make suggestions as to how to start those improvements. Part two
starts to delve a little into the spiritual realm of self-help, which, earlier in part one, the
author admits that some people may consider “woo-woo.” This part is meant not just to
internalize and think about; it is meant to inspire action. The third part is a wonderful set
of meditations, which is an excellent jumping-off point for people who haven’t meditated
and don’t know how to get started.
The part about this book that makes it feel more like a life-coaching book than a
standard self-help book is the questions at the end of each chapter. These questions
help to engage the reader and make them think about their own journey outside of what
they just read. Encouraging the reader to answer the questions helps to keep them
engaged and gives this book more value. Although it doesn’t play as significant a role
as the other parts, there is a bit of memoir sprinkled in where the author talks about past
struggles in her life, struggles in her clients’ lives, and her day job.
This is the perfect book for any occasion, but it is an especially great vacation read
because of its length and its connection to resetting your mind. Ginny Scaduto speaks
from a position of confidence and experience. You can see her sincerity on each page
as she genuinely tries to reach people through her words and help them be better
versions of themselves. This isn’t just a book, it is a blueprint to a better life. If you are
looking for a change, it might be time to Shut Up and Shift!
