Understanding the Universe is exactly the driving force behind author Jeremy Clift’s Space Shield: The Wrath of the Sun. The third book in the Sci-Fi Galaxy Series delves into the discovery of an ancient mosaic that points to a cataclysmic event gearing up to hit the planet once again, and humanity’s only hope for continued survival is a massive shield meant to cover the entire planet. The son of a trillionaire who is charged with constructing the shield takes control of the plans to save the world, but he and an unexpected ally face not only the impending apocalypse, but system failures and a series of political rivalries that threaten to derail the project, all while questions of the event’s impact on the Earth and how the past ties into it come into question.
This was a profound and compelling sci-fi novel. The author takes time to explore the characters and how their relationships affect their work on the project, while also offering deep knowledge of space exploration and solar storms. The family dynamic between the protagonist and his father and the impact that their relationship has on the project is some compelling character study, while the way the author incorporates archaeological exploration into the main narrative and how people’s ancient ancestors related to the universe around them and witnessed their own cosmic events was fascinating to see unfold in a deeply sci-fi narrative.
Readers who enjoy hard science fiction, especially sci-fi that is paced like a technothriller and utilizes other genres like romance, adventure, and action, will thoroughly enjoy this narrative. The themes of mankind’s dependence on technology and the role that plays in how people live their daily lives, with satellites in space impacting the use of GPS, the Internet, and so much more, all played significant roles in the development of this narrative. Getting to see how humanity begins utilizing the resources of the Moon to complete this project was an interesting twist as well, showcasing the role space exploration and mining operations would possibly play in the future, and the level of detail the author put into technological development and actual science referenced in the narrative was incredible to read and see come to life on the page.
